X96 Max+: Armbian server on USB SSD
VERIFIED LIVE
An Android TV box turned into an Armbian server. Autonomous boot from eMMC, system on a USB 3.0 SSD, no SD card.
| SoC | Amlogic S905X3 (4 × Cortex-A55, 2.1 GHz) |
|---|---|
| RAM | 4 GB real, 3.7 GiB seen by Linux |
| eMMC | 32 GB |
| System | Armbian (ophub), Debian trixie, on a 120 GB USB 3.0 SSD |
| Boot | Autonomous from eMMC, no SD card |
| Network | WiFi, Ethernet 100 Mb |
What is verified
- The SoC is a 4-core S905X3, not an S905W.
- RAM is 4 GB, with no software lock.
- Boot starts from eMMC, then Linux takes over the USB 3.0 SSD.
- The SSD is stable thanks to a kernel parameter that disables UAS mode on its USB bridge.
Recovery after a brick
A default installation wrote an incompatible bootloader into the eMMC user area, and the box no longer booted. Recovery took three steps: identify the cause over the serial console, force boot from a fallback source, then rewrite the correct bootloader from a system that boots.
Warning. Any eMMC operation carries a risk of bricking. Before any action: back up the complete eMMC, work with a mains power supply (USB power alone is not enough and causes brown-outs), and use only 3.3 V levels on the serial link.
Restore. If the box no longer boots: restore the eMMC backup with the right tool, then reinstall the bootloader matching the Armbian version. Never rerun the installer with model identifiers that do not match the hardware.
TODO(nico): high-resolution photo with a scale reference
- UART pads: RX, TX, GND
- eMMC chip
Evidence
TODO(nico): provide the output of /proc/cpuinfo and free -h, and a UART boot log.
